Residency
training in Colon & Rectal surgery
Residency training in colon and rectal surgery is a one year program
with many programs offering an optional laboratory or research year. In
order to be certified by the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgery,
one must first be certified by the American Board of Surgery (ABS). Therefore,
with few exceptions, applicants for residency training programs in colon
and rectal surgery must complete a full approved residency in general
surgery and be eligible for examination by the ABS.
Applications may be obtained from the individual programs and completed
during the later months of the PGY-4 year. Personal interviews are
conducted during the first 3 months of the final year of general
surgery. Most programs participate in the National Resident Matching
Program in Colon and Rectal Surgery. Information and applications may be
